286-pool party

day 3 in san diego. today is the pool party at haber's place so he wakes us all up at 8am to go to costco for food, etc. nothing like 5 smelly hungover guys making a costco run. as usual, the cubs were in town which always brings cloudy weather. so, no one actually got in the pool, but the hot tub came in handy.

can someone please tell me why crumley's law school friends crashed the party. did he come for us or them? i guess we'll never figure out what goes on in that mind of his.

after drinking for 6 or so hours at the pool it was time to head to the cubs game. of course, they lost again, 1-2. it is becoming embarrassing to be a cubs fan. freddy almost broke his hand trying to catch a foul ball which haber may have had a better shot at had he not ducked out of the way. too bad i was busy sitting in haber's work seats getting yelled at by loser padre fan (since when did mullets come back in style for women?) or else i would have made sure i caught that ball. btw, padres fans are some of the quietest fans i have ever heard. why is it that they don't serve beer in the stands?

let's head out to the bars... there was a bet on how many of haber's out of town guests would get kicked out of the bars and i'm not sure what the over/under was, but only 1 got kicked out (way to keep the tradition alive day!). although, any three of these guys look like they were drunk enough to get kicked out:

287-cinco de mayo

day 2 here in san diego and things are about to get crazy with the arrival of cinco de mayo as well as the man, the myth, the spivanator, joe spivey (left). of course the day started of with coronas in the afternoon which switched to margarita's at fred's (try the fish tacos) and then to more coronas at altitude on the top of the hilton where we watched the a pitiful game that the cubs lost 0-1 to the padres in extra innings. after that, i'm not sure where we went and i'm also not sure why i was playing pool. haber says i lost the game for him, but tell me mark, who won the table?
dive bars can be fun, but also dangerous. you tend to do things you normally wouldn't do in order to entertain youself. i ended up dancing like michael jackson. the foreign people thought it was pretty good. i may have embarrassed myself, but at least i wasn't caught cheating. don't lie joe, you know you had a crush on gypsy...what would moose say?

p.s. don't leave you camera behind at fred's, you'll end up with pictures like these:

288-horton

got into san diego today - luckily! apparently, missy wasn't happy with my choice of restaurants last night, las pinatas, and tried to sabotage my trip. she said she set the alarm at 5am, so why did a wake up to no alarm at 6:20? that was the time i was supposed to be at the airport. i tried to get my flight changed, but that would have cost more than i paid for the ticket, so we had to fly to midway. i got there at 7:00 for a 7:20 flight. i'm running through security when, of course, the guy in front of me refuses to take everything out of his pockets and has to go through the metal detector like 4 times! how stupid are these people!!! do they think quarters are made of plastic? i ended up having to sprint to my gate and they were announcing last call is i had to push some guy out of the way who was standing on the moving walkway. 'hey buddy', i know it is doing all your walking for you but are you really so lazy as to just stand there? at least get to the side. luckily, i was able to make the flight with my sprinter speed. i was the last one on there and probably upset the people i sat in between who thought they were not going to have to share arm rests.

when i arrived in san diego i thought there was no way my luggage was making it on the flight, since i barely did. but my good luck streak was extending throughout the day as it showed up on the same flight.

the rest of the day was pretty laid back as i worked out, did some shopping (i needed to get a jacket--it's cold in san diego), and headed out to happy hour with haber (apparently, we had to butter some girls up for the pool party on saturday--am i the right guy for that job?).

my good luck ran out when the bulls lost to the heat and the cubs lost (again!) 6-0!

289-get-away day

in baseball, the day before you leave town for a road trip is called get-away day. well, today is MY get-away day before i head to san diego. i got a haircut, got one last work-out in and took missy out to dinner so she'll let me go without a fight (that is, if you call taking your girlfriend to your favorite dive mexican restaurant "going out"). my cubs gear is packed along with my swimsuit and sunscreen and i am ready to turn san diego upside-down!

290-tool is back!

after almost five years, tool is back. today marks the release of 10,000 days. it's been so long since they released an album, that it snuck up on me. luckily i was given a sign. literally, i saw a sign on a construction site letting me know may2nd was the day.

i was originally introduced to tool by a guy i worked with at a summer job (rick white). so when lateralus came out in 1996 it quickly became my favorite album (and still is). rick and i traveled to a couple shows that year at college and i learned that tool fans are as dedicated as any. i was reminded of this today as, although they are not popular in the mainstream, it took me 3 stores to find one that had any left.

check my homepage later if you would like to download some tool.

291-the easiest day ever?

first, my supervisor is going to india for 3 weeks.
then, they planned to close the office early b/c of the immigration protest march through chicago.

SO,
a lot of people didn't show up today. quite frankly, i don't get it. your boss is gone, you get out early. why would you take the day off. after all, even if you come in to work, essentially you would have the day off anyway.

i'll just sit back and enjoy it!

292-nfl draft

yesterday i spent 4 1/2 hours waiting for the bears 1st round draft pick. i've never watched the draft before, but the bears were actually good last year and i wanted to see what they would do. so what did they do after 4 1/2 hours of waiting? they traded the pick!!! i couldn't believe it! i had just wasted my whole morning. i'm definitely no draft expert and i only watch football for the bears and fantasy, but here is my take on the bears draft:

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

the defense was ranked 2nd last year and the offense was ranked 29th, yet they go with all defense for the first five picks? actually, i know what they are thinking. it is probably easier to keep their defense ranked second than it is for them to improve their offense enough to where it will make a difference. here's my take for those who will listen (please note i think the bears needed a receiver or tight end to help the offense more than anything):

1st round: they traded this pick for a 2nd and 3rd round, which i think they did b/c the guy they really wanted was santonio holmes. this was the guy the steelers picked to replace antwaan randle el. the bears tried to get el, but he signed with the steelers (more $$$). i think the bears wanted holmes to be their randle el, but the steelers stole him, so they traded the pick rather than pick some guy they really didn't want. however, they still could have had marcedes lewis, a tight end, or chad jackson, another top receiver, at this pick.

2nd round: danieal manning - so this is their actually first pick and i understand they could use a safety since they traded mike green (who the coaches tried to bench but couldn't since mike brown kept getting hurt), but who is this guy? apparently he went to a small school b/c he couldn't qualify academically at nebraska. sounds like a 'smart' pick to me. i heard someone say that is a unique way to spell his name, i think he just can't spell. could have had sinorice moss,WR.

devin hester - is this the guy they got to be our randle el? i hope not. i know he is quick, but he had a total of 10 catcher in college. best case scenario he turns out to be our kick and punt returner. could have had anthony fasano or leonard pope, TE

3rd round - dusty dvoracek - ok, they just missed leonard pope here, but the went with defense for the 3 consecutive pick. it's obvious they could care less about offense. anyway, first they get a guy who can't spell and apparently this guy had to attend anger management classes in college.

this is pretty much where i lose interest, the bears continued to draft defense and then with their last two picks got a blocking full-back and an offensive lineman. way to improve that offense guys! maybe we can get david terrell back!
